Treasury Department creates website where the public can follow where their tax money goes

On May 9 the U.S. Treasury Department launched a new website intended to allow the public to follow where their tax money goes in regards to government spending.

Labeled as USA Spending, the website is an attempt to show a bit of transparency when it comes to how the government spends your money, and provide real time tracking of dedicated monies.

On Tuesday, the US Treasury launched a new website designed to track virtually every dollar – out of roughly $4 trillion – in federal spending. The new website, Beta.USAspending.gov, was created to put data into the hands of taxpayers by empowering them to track how their tax dollars are spent. The site is designed to follow federal agency spending and, for the first time, links spending data to awards distributed by the government.

In the statement, the Treasury said that ‚Äúthe new site provides taxpayers with the ability to track nearly USD in government spending from Washington, DC directly into their communities and cities,‚ÄĚ says Treasury Secretary Mnuchin. ‚ÄúFurthermore, greater access to data will drive better decision making and strengthen accountability and transparency ‚Äď qualities central to the Administration‚Äôs focus on a more innovative and effective government.‚ÄĚ – Zerohedge

Ironically it was Barack Obama rather than Donald Trump who campaigned with the promise of greater transparency.  However, more documents, programs, and processes were classified and kept from the public by the former President than under any other Commander-in-Chief, and this singular government spending website could end up providing more public information than was ever disclosed during the entire eight years of the Obama presidency.

If the data disclosed on this new website ends up being both accurate and timely, then it will be a great way for President Trump to hold Congress accountable for their long history of waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer money.  However, if over time the new website reveals just a general overview of government expenditures in an attempt to placate the public, then it will be little more than a political stunt, and indicative of what normally comes out of Washington.
